DOWNTOWN 18
48 X 48"
MIXED MEDIA, CANVAS
NICHOLAS CONLON
This painting is based on the movie Downtown 81 and the graffiti of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Jean-Michel was a "tagger" writing poetry on the streets of NYC under the name SAMO before he became one of the most influential painters in American history. SAMO was a graffiti tag for "same old bullshit." My poetry is in here and his in me. Based on SAMO's direct writings and also an ode to some of the great streetartists of the past and today. Like Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quinones, Shepard Fairy and Banksy. There's even an ode to Glenn O'Brien, who wrote "Downtown 81" as well as Deborah Harry and Madonna for all the appropriate reasons. This is a unique painting and a unique perspective on all sorts of different mediums of art. This is a conversation piece. Original. Nicknickers. Ironic. Idiotic. Iconic.
