HOOSIERS is based on the true story of a small-town Indiana team that made the state finals in 1954. The team was Milan High school from Milan, Indiana. The player Jimmy Chitwood's character is based on is Indiana high school legend Bobby Gene Plump. Plump is a member of the Milan High School basketball team that won the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Tournament in 1954. Plump was selected Indiana's coveted "Mr. Basketball" in 1954, the award bestowed upon Indiana's most outstanding senior basketball player as voted on by the press.
